John H. Mattheessen

John Mattheessen is a commercial litigator and business lawyer licensed in Illinois.  John has extensive experience handling complex commercial litigation matters including real estate disputes, shareholder disputes, and contract disputes. He also maintains a transactional practice and has experience negotiating commercial leases, operating agreements, and professional service agreements.

Areas of Practice

Real estate matters: John has extensive experience in real estate litigation and transactional work. He has represented one of the largest real estate brokerage companies in the state of Illinois in a variety of real estate disputes and employment matters.  He has represented both purchasers and sellers in both real estate transactions and in litigation arising from sales of commercial and residential property.  He has also represented real estate brokers to resolve Real Estate License Act compliance issues before the Illinois Department of Professional Responsibility. His deep understanding of the real estate industry allows him to effectively handle matters such as real estate contract disputes, commercial evictions, real estate disclosure violations, broker commission disputes, and landlord-tenant conflicts.

Commercial litigation: Words matter, the words of a contract particularly so.  A major component of John's practice includes resolving contract disputes, leveraging his meticulous attention to detail and the power of the written word to assert and enforce his clients’ contractual rights. He has successfully litigated numerous breach of contract cases, securing favorable outcomes for his clients.

Outside counsel: In addition to his litigation practice, John advises businesses on a wide range of commercial transactions. His expertise includes drafting and negotiating Master Services Agreements, asset purchase agreements, and commercial leases. John leverages his understanding of civil procedure and commercial litigation to advise his clients on the risk factors of complex transactions while negotiating with the client's ultimate objective in mind.

Licensure

John is admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois. He is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and is admitted to practice before the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Education

John earned his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he graduated cum laude. During his time in law school, John demonstrated an exceptional grasp of commercial law and earned four CALI Awards for Excellence, which are awarded to the top student in each class.
